Patient Information and Instructions Prior to Testing:

A transesophageal echocardiogram is a special examination that uses ultrasound waves to examine the heart by placing the ultrasound transducer in the esophagus directly behind the heart. This is accomplished by directing a small device similar to a gastroscope through the mouth and down into the esophagus.

The quality of the study obtained in this manner far exceeds the traditional procedure (which involves placing the probe on top of the chest wall).

The examination will be performed by a cardiologist and all vital signs will be monitored continuously.

In preparation for Transesophageal Echocardiography, you are required to:

Be without food or water for at least 6 hours prior to the procedure. You may take necessary medications that cannot be postponed such as anti-arrhythmic agents with small sips of water at the proper time without interrupting your schedule. If you are diabetic, eat a light breakfast four hours before your scheduled test. TAKE HALF OF YOUR USUAL AMOUNT OF MORNING INSULIN. If your Transesophageal Echo is in conjunction with a CARDIOVERSION be WITHOUT food or water for at least 8 HOURS.

An intravenous line may be inserted into the vein in case medications need to be administered.

The throat will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic agent, using a spray or a gargle. Additionally, intravenous sedatives may be administered if necessary.

Antibiotics may be given if it is deemed necessary by the examining physician.

After the test, do not eat or drink for a least 2 hours or until your swallowing reflex is completely recovered, at which time you may resume your regular meals, activities and medications.

Please do not drive a car. It is requested that someone drive you to and from the test due to the sedative administered. Your activity for the rest of the day will be restricted to resting at home.

Please report immediately if you have fever, chills, chest pain or bleeding.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call 298-2134 or 298-2138.
